I Hunt Killers

Book Review: I Hunt Killers by Barry Lyga

I woke up the other day to a text from my oldest friend that said: “You need to read I Hunt Killers right now!”

This friend also happens to be a librarian so I took her advice and immediately put a hold on the book. I started and finished the book the day I checked it out of the library.

The story follows young Jasper “Jazz” Dent, the teenage son of Billy Dent - who is declared by the novel as the most notorious “super-serial killer” of all time. While Billy raised our protagonist Jazz, Billy murdered a record number of people; all the while teaching young Jazz the finer psychology behind murder. The novel introduces teen Jazz to the reader four years after Billy’s capture. In addition to the average struggle that accompanies most teens, Jazz has to deal with the remains of his father’s brainwashing. Jazz learned skills like manipulation, spotting “prospect” kills, and how to interact with the world without leaving evidence. Skills which prove beneficial to Jazz, a teen who just wants to live an average (as possible) life. If that weren’t enough for Jazz to deal with – a body was just found in his town with eerily similar traits to his father’s early killings. Jazz will have to use every trick his father ever taught him to catch this copy cat killer before it is too late.

A definite must read for anyone who loves stories with surprising endings and great character development.

The sequel Game is due out April 16, 2013.

Click the link and place the book on hold today!

Book Lover websites

Are you always trying to remember what you have read? Looking for some lists of good books? You might be interested in trying out two websites that allow you to view OR make lists of your own.

22 books.

The creator of this website was looking for a list of Kurt Vonnegut's books one day and had trouble finding one. So he decided to make a site where booklists could be created and shared (or not if you want to keep yours private). He entitled it 22 books because this was how many books he found by Vonnegut. The site promises to offer more opportunities in the future.

This website allows you to
  • find other book lovers' favorite books, award winning books, genre lists, etc.
  • create your own book lists
  • add a book cover picture (for those who tell a book by the cover)
  • make comments
  • insert you list(s) in a website
  • share them with others on the website
  • sort them by author or title or date read.

With this site you will never again have to guess if you have already read a book. Just check your lists!

For hard core book lovers who want more than lists, GoodReads allows you to not only find and create lists (40 million books so far), but you may write reviews, form groups, create trivia questions about titles, and join forumsor book clubs to chat about books. The lists offered here are tagged so it is easy for you to look at all of the lists that fit your search--fiction, nonfiction, science fiction fantasy, history, romance, childrens, young adult and more. For those young people searching for a good book this summer, there are ready-made lists for them to peruse. This site is well-known throughout librarydom so well worth checking it out!

Some of the popular lists found on
LISTOPIA (I love this section title!) include the Worst Books of All Time, Best Books Ever, Best 20th Century Books, Best Science Fiction Books, and The Book was Better than the Movie, plus oodles more. YOU have the opportunity to VOTE on these lists so you become a participant in the community right away! This will be a site that will be bookmarked on my computer. How about you? SH

Where are the Good Books?

"Can you suggest a good book to read?" is a common request at the Reference Desk. Wellesley Free Library has several resources to assist you in finding the perfect book.

Novelist - is an online Reader's Advisory database that you can reach from the library catalog. On the Search Page of the catalog, click on the Reference and Information Tab, then on databases, and scroll down on this page and click on Novelist (or just click on the underlined Novelist on the left). You will find books by author or title, Read Alikes, Book Lists, Award Winners, Recommended Reads by genre, and even some websites that offer more recommendations. So, for instance, if you are looking for some more thrillers to round out your reading history, the Recommended Reads list on Novelist offers 13 different types to browse--from Medical to Serial (termed Hunting Humans) to Legal Thrillers. Remember, however, you will need your library card number to use Novelist from home.

Book Page - Wellesley Free Library offers a print review source of new titles of interest--adult, children's, audio, and book group titles. You may take a peek at some of the highlights of the September issue by clicking on the underlined Book Page to your left OR stop by the library and pick up your own copy on the book display in the New Book Foyer as you enter the library. The image at the right shows the September cover, and some of the featured authors are Curtis Sittenfeld, Kathy Reichs, and Christopher Paolini. Enjoy!

Bookletters - is an e-mail newsletter that is sent to you regularly to alert you to new books in an area of interest. You choose the ones you would like to receive. Some are sent by the staff of Bookletters while others are hand selected to feature by our Reference Staff. We even have a newsletter with the Top 10 requested books at Wellesley Free Library called Wellesley Favorites. So, whether your allegiance is solely to fiction, mystery, thrillers, sci fi or you won't pick up anything but non-fiction, Bookletters has something for you. Sign up for the newsletters of your choice on our webpage by clicking on the underlined Bookletters on the left.

Now you have some resources to try out. Stay tuned, I will have more ways to find books of your choice tomorrow.
